A meeting of the International Humanitarian Law Center was held at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland, on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. The meeting was attended by Mr. Khaled Khattab, President of the Center, and Ms. Amelia, the Libya Human Rights Officer.
The President of the Center presented the Center’s role in promoting human rights in Libya through awareness-raising, monitoring, and documentation activities. Mr. Khattab also discussed the Center’s efforts to provide psychological support to victims of torture in Libya.
The meeting also addressed the report of the Fact-Finding Mission on Libya. Discussions focused on observations made in the report by the Libyan government, some municipalities, and non-governmental organizations in Libya. The report contained inaccurate information and data, and the need to inform the High Commissioner was emphasized, due to the inaccuracies of some individuals who documented certain data included in the report.
The meeting also discussed the Libyan government’s efforts to improve the human rights environment in the context of addressing the recommendations made in several reports. The Center also welcomed Human Rights Council Resolution 41/52, which aims to provide technical assistance and support in the field of human rights in Libya. Libyan government institutions have already begun implementing this resolution by holding workshops to develop a national plan to improve the human rights environment.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties agreed on the importance of continued communication between the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Center to promote human rights in Libya.
