The Libyan Center for International Humanitarian Law is participating in the Third International Conference on International Humanitarian Law in Light of Islamic Jurisprudence, held in Muscat, the capital of Oman. Professor Khattab Khalid, the Center’s president, presented a research paper entitled “Humanitarian Principles During War: Between Islamic Jurisprudence and International Humanitarian Law.”
The conference, organized by the College of Sharia Sciences, opened today under the title “International Humanitarian Law in Light of Islamic Jurisprudence” and will continue until February 19, 2025, at the College’s premises. The conference aims to examine the relationship between international humanitarian law and the principles of Islamic Sharia, highlighting issues related to armed conflicts and the protection of human rights during wars.
The conference addresses several themes, including the role of Islamic jurisprudence in promoting international peace and protecting victims of armed conflicts, as well as discussing the legal and Sharia rules that contribute to mitigating the effects of war.
It also reviews the efforts of Muslim scholars in developing the theoretical framework of the principles of international humanitarian law.
The conference witnessed broad participation from within and outside the Sultanate of Oman, bringing together 86 researchers from 17 countries. Participants presented 75 research papers, including 10 joint papers. Representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross and several government entities also attended, along with researchers and scholars specializing in international humanitarian law and Islamic jurisprudence.
The opening ceremony was attended by His Excellency Sheikh Abdulmalik bin Ali bin Abdullah Al Khalili, Chairman of the State Council. Participants emphasized the importance of integrating Sharia rulings into addressing contemporary challenges of armed conflict, thereby enhancing awareness of international humanitarian law and affirming its alignment with the principles of Islamic Sharia to guarantee human rights during times of conflict.
